Chris Maina Peter is a Professor Emeritus of Law at the School of Law of the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He holds LLB and LLM from the University of Dar es Salaam and Dr Jur from the University of Konstanz, Germany. Professor Maina is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Zanzibar Legal Services Centre (ZLSC); Managing Editor of the Zanzibar Yearbook of Law (ZYBL); and a member of the UN International Law Commission (ILC). He has been an external examiner at Universities including: Nairobi (Kenya); Makerere (Uganda); Pretoria (South Africa); Witts (South Af rica); Fort Hare (South Af rica); and University of South Af rica (UNISA). He has also been a Visiting Professor to various Universities including: Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund, Sweden; Max Planck Institute for Foreign Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg, Germany; University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany; and Institute of International Law and International Relations of the University of Graz, Austria. Besides teaching, Prof. Peter is a well respected civil society leader in the East African region where he has founded numerous organizations including Kituo cha Katiba – East African Center for Constitutional Governance, the East Africa Civil Society Forum (EACSOF), the Foundation for Civil Society and the Zanzibar Legal Services Center in Tanzania. He has served as Chair of the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Af rica and advised a number of regional and international grant makers and program implementers in Tanzania and the region.
